We know that consumerism is a big factor in environmental destruction, as the extraction of raw materials, manufacture of consumer goods, and transport of those goods to markets all produce pollution and waste. And then, when the items become unwanted, they end up in landfills.
We also know that holidays encourage more consumerism than the baseline rate: people feel obligated to buy Christmas presents and cards, and then there is all the paraphernalia for Hallowe'en, Thanksgiving, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, etc. Most of that stuff is cheap plastic, and might not be kept from one year to the next.
So....how many here have decided to resist the holiday hoopla and avoid the consumer side of it? My family already knows I do not shop for Christmas; I have not managed to get them to stop buying me presents, but I am working on it. It's not that I dislike Christmas; just that gathering the family from far and wide is celebration enough in itself. I turn off my porch and living room lights at Hallowe'en to signal that I have not bought candy. And I like Hallowe'en! I have a costume -- the same one I wear year after year -- in case someone invites me to a Hallowe'en event.
