Using tires or strawbales, or glass bottles to build a house seems like a great thing; but sometimes it comes across as... well... elitist -- in that in order to build such a house, you need to have access to financing, contractors, etc., just like building a conventional house. Most people never attain the economic resources to build their own home, whether conventional or alternative. It is a long way from Indiginous peoples who built homes using their local natural and community resources outside the money economy. Most such "sustainable" homes are as far out of my reach as a conventional home.
So, for those of you who actually live in alternative housing, how did you make it happen?
