So I have gotten involved with a soon-to-be "Ecovillage" in Brazil. I cannot link to their Facebook page here (that would be considered spamming and would t me expelled from Passions Network), so instead, I offer the topic generally for discussion.
The concept of an ecovillage is clear enough: an intentional community built around the shared interest in environmentally sustainable living. Usually this involves such initiatives as permaculture to produce a self-sufficient food supply; homes built with sustainable local materials; and renewable energy generated onsite. But the particular one I am contemplating has controversial twist. In their documents, they note that many ecovillages fail because they divide the land into individual plots, which encourages members to focus on developing their own individual dreams and visions at the expense of community life. Also, in this situation, people naturally tend to see their plots as investments which can potentially be sold at profit -- which brings all the environmental perils of speculation we see in the world at large. This planned ecovillage therefore brings a socialist worldview to the concept, i.e. members may still have separate houses for privacy, but all the land is common land owed jointly by all members; and an anarchist social structure, i.e. all members have equal say in community decisions.
Now, as a child of the Cold War, I never thought I would say this, but: I think I am ready to go that route in life.
Live was I ere I saw evil. |
